![]() | History of the organic lenses, in particular about the CR39 material. The organic lenses are made up of macromolecular materials and are usually called ¨amorphous¨, because they don't follow any principle of ordinary crystallization. The CR39 lense was born at the beginning of the Second World War. It came out from a searching programm, in order to obtain non-thermoplastic materials from the Affiliated Company PPG, the Columbia Southern Chemical Company. The scientists of this searching called it ¨Columbia Resins¨. In the 1940 the scientists and the researchers created a monomer, the Alil Giglicol Carbonate (ADC) and in the following years 180 derivatives of this monomer were analysed. The thirty-ninth monomer seemed to have the right properties to become the reference material for the building of the ophtalmic lenses. The organic lenses of the giarre.com catalogue, such as Hi-Performance 1,5, Orma 1,5, Fly 1,5, HiLux, etc. are all opthalmic lenses in CR39 material.
